What is a Letter of Medical Necessity?
A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is documentation from an independent licensed practitioner stating that an expense may be medically necessary based on your individual circumstances.
An LMN can help establish why a service that may not ordinarily qualify as a medical expense is being used for a specific health-related purpose.
Because eligibility depends on your individual circumstances, receiving an LMN is not guaranteed.
Do I have an HSA or FSA?
HSA — Health Savings Account
An HSA is an individually owned account that can be used for qualified medical expenses. HSA funds generally roll over from year to year.
FSA — Flexible Spending Account
An FSA is an employer-sponsored benefit that can be used for qualified medical expenses. Depending on your plan, unused funds may be subject to plan-year deadlines, a grace period, or limited carryover.
Not sure which one you have? Check with your employer, benefits department, or HSA/FSA plan administrator.
