Side-by-side or back-to-back — your call
A couples massage is a shared massage experience for two people. With i-thriv you have two options: two therapists work simultaneously in the same room (side-by-side, the classic couples format), or one therapist massages you both back-to-back in the same visit at a lower price. Both formats are booked as a single "Couples Massage" — you simply pick when scheduling.
Side-by-side is the go-to for date nights, anniversaries, honeymoons, and babymoons. Back-to-back is a great fit when only one room comfortably fits a table or when you're keeping the visit budget-friendly.
Perfect for special occasions — and ordinary weekends
Couples massage is one of our most-booked services for milestone moments — anniversaries, birthdays, honeymoons at Palm Springs and Temecula resorts, babymoons, and Valentine's Day. It's just as common on a regular weekend at home: two tables, matching playlists, and no drive to a spa.
- •Anniversary or Valentine's Day in-home
- •Honeymoon or babymoon at a resort or vacation rental
- •Post-hike or post-race recovery for active couples
- •Prenatal + partner session (one prenatal-trained therapist, one general)
Different modalities and pressure for each person
You don't have to book the same style. One of you can get deep tissue while the other gets Swedish, and each therapist adjusts pressure independently. Prenatal is available for the pregnant partner while the other receives any modality they'd like.
Space and setup
For the side-by-side format, plan on roughly 10-by-10 feet of open floor space — enough for two tables with about three feet between them and room for both therapists to move. A primary bedroom, spacious living room, or hotel suite typically works well. For back-to-back with one therapist, a single 7-by-9-foot area is enough since the tables are set up one at a time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between side-by-side and back-to-back couples massage?+
Side-by-side means two therapists working on both of you at the same time in the same room. Back-to-back means one therapist massages you both in sequence during the same visit — you get the same shared experience at a lower price since it's one provider.
Do we need a big house or hotel suite for a couples massage?+
For side-by-side, plan on about 10-by-10 feet of open space so two tables and two therapists can work comfortably. Back-to-back only needs enough room for one table (about 7-by-9 feet) since the second session starts after the first.
Can one of us get deep tissue while the other gets Swedish?+
Yes. Each person can choose their own modality (Swedish, deep tissue, sports, prenatal) and pressure. Your therapists customize independently.
Is couples massage a good idea for a babymoon or during pregnancy?+
It's one of our most-requested prenatal formats. Book side-by-side and request a prenatal-trained therapist for the pregnant partner; the other partner can receive any modality. We recommend clearing prenatal massage with your OB or midwife first.
Can we book a couples massage at a hotel or resort?+
Yes — hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals across Southern California are among our most common couples-massage locations, especially in Palm Springs, Temecula, San Diego, and Orange County.
How long is a couples massage session?+
Side-by-side sessions run the length you book — 60, 90, or 120 minutes — since both people are being massaged simultaneously. Back-to-back sessions take roughly twice the booked length end-to-end because the therapist works on one person after the other.
How much should we tip for a couples massage?+
Tipping is optional and never auto-added. If you'd like to tip, 15–20% total is customary — split between the two therapists for side-by-side sessions, or given to the single therapist for back-to-back.
